Ignorance really is bliss.

February 2, 2013

I saw The Impossible last night and it tore my heart out. The film was based on a true story about a family’s miracle survival of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster in Thailand back in 2004 – a microscopic view into the sequence of events that took place and the horrific experiences they went through. Dragged around underwater and swept away by a ferocious 30 ft. wall of water, this family of five (three of whom were just little boys) was split up, severely wounded and injured, and barely hanging on. Yet at the end of it all, they managed to find each other and survive. Love is so powerful and the human fighting spirit is incredible. What compelling performances by Naomi Watts and up and coming young actor Tom Holland. Read about the story here.

I say ignorance really is bliss because when I watch films like this, it infects me with sadness and I can’t stop thinking about it. I find myself completely entrenched in it and wanting to read more about it and other survival stories. Then my heart starts to feel heavy. These people have lived, loved, lost, and fought – they are heroes. There isn’t much I can do other than appreciate my blessed and fortunate life and be grateful.
